Why I Recommend

UnCruise in Alaska, all nine itineraries compared.

UnCruise runs nine core itineraries in Alaska. Choosing between them looks like a preference question and is actually three questions in a stack: how much ice do you want, how far from Juneau are you willing to go, and how hard do you want to work?

Answer those three and the list sorts itself. Answer none of them and you will book on the itinerary name, which is the one thing on this page I would most like to talk you out of.

Start here: “with Glacier Bay” in the title does not always mean Glacier Bay

This is the fork that decides the trip, and it is not on the booking page.

UnCruise operates inside Glacier Bay National Park as an authorized National Park Service concessioner. But their itinerary titles do not distinguish between sailings that go deep into the park and anchor for two full days and sailings that carry “with Glacier Bay” in the name and stay in the Outer Bay.

ItineraryWhat “Glacier Bay” means on it
Glacier Bay Adventure CruiseDeep in the park. Two full days.
Glacier Bay NP with Inside Passage & San Juan IslandsDeep in the park. Two full days.
National Parks by Land and Sea: Denali to Glacier BayDeep in the park. Two full days.
Northern Passages with Glacier Bay & SitkaDeep in the park. One day.
Wild, Woolly and Wow with Glacier BayOuter Bay only.
Alaska’s Glacier Wilderness with Glacier BayOuter Bay only.

UnCruise explains the Outer Bay routing in their own words: “the Wilderness Legacy opts for exploration in the Glacier Bay ‘Outer Bay.’ Because of this, there are less restrictions on where we can take our guests.” They sell the upside honestly — parts of the park almost no visitor sees — and for some travelers that is genuinely the better week.

But it is not the tidewater-glacier day. If the picture in your head is a wall of blue ice calving a few hundred yards from your kayak, only the top four rows deliver it, and two itineraries with Glacier Bay in the name will not.

So the first question is the simplest one: is there ice in your picture? If yes, two options come off the list before you look at a single fare.

All nine, side by side

Two things worth noticing before you read further. The cheapest itinerary on the list is also one of the two with the most Glacier Bay in it — that is unusual and it is why the Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise is where most first-time UnCruise travelers land. And the fare range across the lineup is nearly three to one, which is not about luxury. It is about how far from a road the ship goes.

The three that will actually be in play

Most people reading this will end up choosing between three sailings, so here they are properly.

Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise — seven nights, round-trip Juneau, two full days deep in the park. It is the cheapest of the deep-park options and the flying is the simplest of any itinerary on the list, because you land in Juneau and leave from Juneau. If ice is the reason you are going, this is the center of gravity and everything else is a deviation from it.

Alaska’s Fjords & Glaciers with Ketchikan — seven nights, Juneau to Ketchikan, no Glacier Bay at all. Same starting fare as the one above, which makes the trade unusually clean: you give up the park and you get a different coast, plus a one-way routing that means two different airports. Worth knowing that the terrain here runs to old logging roads, which UnCruise notes make “great hiking paths” — this is graded trail rather than bushwhack, and for some travelers that is the deciding fact rather than a footnote.

Northern Passages with Glacier Bay & Sitka — seven nights, Juneau to Sitka, one deep day in the park. You pay $1,400 more than the Adventure Cruise and get one day of Glacier Bay instead of two, plus Sitka, plus Baranof Island. Choose it for Sitka and the terrain, not for the park. And know going in that UnCruise’s own guidance flags this route as a favorite for all-day outings with their most active guests — Baranof is steep and forested.

The intensity fork, which nobody publishes

There is no activity rating anywhere in UnCruise’s published material. No scale, no tiers, no per-itinerary score. I have looked. The closest thing to a public answer is a line in their FAQ about whether you are “a hard charger” or “prefer to take it easy.”

What can be pieced together from their own itinerary copy is this:

There is no designated gentlest itinerary, because they do not designate one. What there is, on every sailing, is a nightly menu: the expedition team lays out the next day’s options and takes what they call your “adventure order” individually. You are not locked to the group’s pace. But the floor is still a skiff, a wet landing and a walk — which is the part I refuse to soften.

The ship decides as much as the route

Nine itineraries, seven Alaska vessels, and the pairing is not arbitrary.

Safari Endeavour84424No
Wilderness Discoverer76343No
Wilderness Explorer74373No
Wilderness Adventurer60304No
Safari Explorer36183No
Safari Quest22114No

The spread from 22 guests to 88 is the widest variable on this page and it changes the trip more than the route does. A 22-guest sailing is a house party that happens to be floating. An 86-guest sailing has a lounge with corners in it. Neither is better; they suit different people, and solo travelers in particular should choose deliberately here rather than by fare.

And there is an awkward pairing worth knowing before you fall in love with an itinerary. The one ship with an elevator, the Wilderness Legacy, sails the route UnCruise themselves call their most active. So for a 2027 Alaska sailing, an elevator and two full days deep in Glacier Bay do not appear on the same trip. If stairs are a real constraint for you, that fork needs to happen before anything else does.

The flying decides more than people expect

Round-trip Juneau is the simplest air in the lineup and it belongs to the Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise and to Wild, Woolly and Wow. Everything else asks something of you.

One-way routings — Juneau to Sitka, Juneau to Ketchikan, Seward to Dutch Harbor — mean two different airports and usually a connection through Seattle in each direction. The 12-night Seattle to Juneau solves this elegantly by starting somewhere with real air service. The Seward departures need Anchorage plus a ground transfer, and Dutch Harbor is its own logistics conversation entirely.

None of this is a reason to choose or reject an itinerary on its own. It is a reason to price the whole trip rather than the cruise fare, which is most of what an UnCruise sailing actually costs.

What I’d choose, and for whom

If ice is the reason you’re going — Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise. Cheapest deep-park option, simplest air, two full days anchored in the park.

If you want the biggest version of the trip and the flying doesn’t scare you — the 12-night Seattle to Juneau, which adds the San Juans, two sea days and the same two days in the park for about $2,400 more.

If you want Alaska but not the park — Fjords & Glaciers, at the same entry fare, with gentler ground underfoot.

If you want the fewest people — the 22-guest Safari Quest, and go in knowing you are paying a significant premium for that and taking the Outer Bay routing with it.

If someone in the party can’t do stairs — we start with the fleet, not the map, and the honest answer may be that a different style of Alaska trip serves you better. I would rather say that in September than have you find it out at sea.

And the week you choose matters nearly as much as the itinerary — bears, whales and weather are not evenly distributed across the season, and the received wisdom about which month to pick is wrong in at least three places.

How you actually book this

There is no online booking for UnCruise — not for availability, not for reservations. Rates are published on their site, cabin category by cabin category; space is not, and every cabin is held by phone or email with their Adventure Specialists.

That is unusual in 2026 and it cuts both ways. It means you cannot check space at midnight. It also means every booking goes through a human who knows the fleet, and that a good advisor can ask the questions this page has been raising — which cabin sits over the engine, what the threshold height is on a specific ship, whether a particular departure is already thin on the deck you want — and get a real answer rather than a dropdown.

Some Alaska departures sell out months ahead. If you are aiming at 2027 and you know which of the nine you want, the useful move is to have the conversation early and hold space, not to watch a page that will never show you a price drop.

Everything UnCruise in one place — the fleet, the five destinations, who it suits — is on my UnCruise page.
