Travel with me, what it means and doesn’t.

Every so often I put a departure in front of you and say: come with me. The Douro in 2027 is the one taking shape right now. I want to be precise about what that invitation is, because it’s different from what most people picture when they hear “group trip” — and the difference works in your favor.

Who does what

The operator runs the trip. On the Douro that’s AmaWaterways: their ship, their captain and crew, their guides, their excursions, their onboard program. Delivering the week is their job, and they come to it with the staff, the local knowledge, the contingency plans and the responsibility that a trip needs.

I’m your travel advisor. Before you go, that’s real work — choosing the right line and the right sailing, matching you to the right cabin, handling the booking, the insurance conversation, the flights and the nights on either side. After you’re home, I’m still the person you call.

And once we’re there, I’m a fellow passenger. I book my own cabin. I sit at the same tables and take the same excursions. I’m not a tour leader and I’m not running the itinerary — I’m the person who picked this week because I’d want to be on it, and who would rather be on it with people I like.

Why I do it this way

Because the operators are far better at operating than I would ever be. A line that sails the same river every week of the season knows the locks, the quintas, the weather, the doctor in the next town. What I’m good at is the choosing: which line, which ship, which week, which cabin, which traveler. That’s the part of the job that makes a trip go right before anyone has packed a bag.

It’s also the honest version of the job. I’m a travel advisor — I book you with the people who run trips. When I come along, I’m there because I love the trip, not because I’ve quietly become the tour company.

What you actually get

An operator chosen on purpose. I only put my name behind a departure on a line I trust. AmaWaterways is the line that converted me on my own Danube sailing — the crew that knew my name by the second morning, the table that took a dietary note seriously.

One advisor for the whole booking. Your cabin, your flights, your pre- and post-nights, your insurance questions — one person who knows all of it, before you go and after you’re home.

Someone aboard who knows you. I know the line, I know what you came for, and I know how you like to travel. If something isn’t right, I’ll go to bat for you with the crew — the same way I would from home.

Good company. The same faces at dinner by the third night. A small circle of people who said yes to the same thing, and me among them.

What it isn’t

It isn’t a tour I operate, and I’m not your point of contact on board — the operator is. They have the ship, the crew and the authority to change the plan on the day; I don’t, and I won’t pretend to. Anything about the itinerary, the ship or the schedule goes to them first. What I’ll always do is stand next to you while you ask.
